The REEF X SAS Beach Clean was a huge success
Our REEF beach clean held at Watergate Bay was a huge success! Together, our incredible volunteers managed to collect 18 bags full of plastic waste. Alongside plastic fragments, we found items such as fishing rope, water bottles and hundreds of nurdles.
Volunteers arrived raring to go, setting themselves challenges to collect the most plastic along the beach. Watergate Bay looked clean at first. However, once you start looking, thousands of small fragments of plastic started to appear beneath the sand. These are called nurdles or mermaid’s tears.
For all their hard work, each volunteer was rewarded with some REEF goodies to take away with them. Dave, a long-time supporter of Surfers Against Sewage and overall legend, won the best beach clean find with an enormous fishing rope bundle found wedged between the rocks.
Our REEF Partnership
REEF was founded in 1984 by two brothers, where a ridiculously comfortable sandal was created to keep up with their active lifestyle. They soon moved to California to develop the REEF brand and the rest was history.
Now, 38 years later, REEF are still at it. They are encouraging communities around the world to embrace the fun, freedom and spirit of the beach. So whatever you’re doing, REEF sandals are designed to keep you ridiculously comfortable, relaxed and free.
REEF have pledged to hep protect our beaches and oceans so that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy it.
“We believe there is a connection between our well-being and our beaches. A birthplace and soul of our brand, a place we respect and protect, where fun and freedom come to life. As founders of the REEF x Surfrider Better Beach Alliance, we’re dedicated to plastic pollution initiatives through beach clean-ups and environmental legislation.
We are really pleased to join forces with Surfers Against Sewage to continue our initiative in the UK. Our global pledge for 2022 is to host over 1,000 beach cleans and remove 125,000 pounds of rubbish.” – REEF
The Million Mile Clean
With over 8 million pieces of plastic entering the ocean every single day, we need your help to make a difference. So we’re asking our communities to do 10 miles of cleaning. Whether that be on the beach, in a park, on top of a mountain or in a riverbed. By having 100,000 volunteers do 10 miles each, we will reach one million miles by the end of 2022.
“We’re stoked to have REEF join us in creating a beach clean like no other. Their dedication to protecting the environment from the current plastic pollution crisis has blown us away at Surfers Against Sewage and we’re delighted to be working with them to inspire members of the public to join in with a beach clean or two.” – Emma, Corporate Partnerships Officer at SAS
