Challenge of a Lifetime for Charity
Whilst most of us took it easy over the Christmas break, Xaiver Baker, Paul Berry, and Chris Mannion from team Mermaid Atlantic were pulling strokes in their rowing boat in the middle of the Atlantic.
Months of preparation have gone into what is considered to be one of the toughest physical and logistical challenges on Earth. They have encountered equipment failure, a period of headwinds which saw them barely holding position, and gruelling stints on the oars. The once in a lifetime opportunity is a personal challenge that also aims to support three incredible charities, Hampshire & IOW Wildlife Trust, Surfers Against Sewage, and The Seahorse Trust, all of whom are pivotal in the protection of our oceans.
The challenge, World’s Toughest Row Atlantic, brings together teams from all walks of life, united by the same objective: to take on the unique task of crossing an ocean in a rowing boat.
The race offers different experiences to all involved. Teams battle with sleep deprivation, salt sores, and physical extremes inflicted by the race. The challenge creates strong friendships and competitiveness gives way to the camaraderie that is required to complete the challenge. Upon finishing, rowers join a small community of friends that have shared the adventures of an ocean crossing. The mental and physical endurance will result in a life-changing achievement, that will never be forgotten.
This is just one incredible example of a once in a lifetime experience that ticks the box for supporting charities and pursuing personal challenges. As we head into 2024, we have more individuals and groups taking on a once in a lifetime challenge, we have rowers, swimmers, surfers and runners all taking on incredible challenges. You could join them.
