Michael O'Mara Books

Book sales & support of campaigns

Michael O’Mara Books support Surfers Against Sewage each year through various campaigns and projects. And this year sees a generous level of support towards our vital work around our Brand Audit.

Michael O’Mara Books

Starting in 1985 in the spare room of their semi-detached Clapham house, Mr. and Mrs. O’Mara started an independent publishing firm. Now, after nearly 40 years of publications, it is still a family firm, producing 150 new books a year. In recent years, Michael O’Mara Books have supported over 15 charities, as well as focusing on their carbon impact as much as possible. Read more about MOM Books here.

The support we receive from the independent publisher is helping SAS to produce the Brand Audit and call out the Dirty Dozen. This year, 12 Global Organisations accounted for over 70% of all branded pollution found. Together, we recorded 10,843 items of branded packaging pollution across beaches, mountains, rivers, streets, woodlands and green spaces. Read more about our Brand Audit here.

Our findings show that over 70% of these items come from some of the world’s most powerful, profitable and influential companies. Therefore, we think it’s time for these global companies to step up and take responsibility for the pollution they are putting into the environment. We couldn’t have done this without the support from Michael O’Mara Books.

Mermaid Gin & Isle of Wight Distillery supports Surfers Against Sewage by joining The Ocean Network, getting involved in the Million Mile Clean and in 2023, they’re taking on the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic challenge raising vital funds for SAS.

About Isle of Wight Distillery

As the first and only distillery on the Isle of Wight, the crew distill spirits shaped by their stunning surroundings, as well as the unique character of the island. The IOW crew craft a range of smooth, complex spirits by doing things differently, minimising waste, using ethically sourced and often local ingredients.

About Mermaid Gin

Inspired by its lead botanical rock samphire, known locally as ‘mermaid’s kiss’, Mermaid Gin began in 2014.  The aromatic succulent clings to the cliffs surrounding the Island and marks the high tide line on its majestic beaches. The rock samphire is a signal that shipwrecked sailors are safe from the raging seas, just like the kiss of the mythical mermaid, saving sailors lost at sea.

The Race

Three friends, all alike in ambition, are undertaking the ultimate ocean encounter in 2023, The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge.

Even more so, the team are being mindful of the environmental impact of the race. As a result, they are aiming to compete as a Net-Zero outfit. Through monitoring all actions and logistics, they will calculate and offset their carbon footprint through blue carbon credits, in which seagrass projects are included.

Dick Pearce & Friends

SAS Branded Bellyboards

When the fun is over, single-use polystyrene bodyboards are often discarded across our beautiful beaches. Eventually, they break down into tiny pieces, causing harm to wildlife in and around the ocean.

That’s why Dick Pearce and Friends support Surfers Against Sewage with the latest Limited Edition wooden bellyboard range, ready for you to catch the next wave. Even better, they’re completely plastic free. With three colourways to choose from, we know you’re going to love them.

Supporting our ocean saving work

For every SAS Limited Edition board sold, 15% will be donated to Surfers Against Sewage. So if you wanted to give bellyboarding a go, there’s no better time to #TryThePly

But what makes wood so good?

If you chat to someone with a wooden board, they’ll often wax lyrical with tales of their benefits and proudly talk of how the board has been passed down through multiple generations. Contrast this with the fleeting joy of the vast amount of polystyrene bodyboards that fill beach car park bins across the country and it’s easy to see why we think that wood really is that good.

Benefits of Wooden Boards

To look into the benefits of wooden boards, we take a duck-dive into the lifecycle of our favourite raw material, revealing benefits for people and planet. Read about this here.

But who are Dick Pearce & Friends?

Founded by Charles Pearce in South Molton, Devon in 1928, the shop used to be a tannery and Charles used to make all sorts of beach goods. They started making bellyboards in the ’40s.

Charles Pearce handed the business on to his son Dick once he passed away. When Dick Pearce died in 2010, Jamie bought the business from his widow, along with the manufacturing equipment and have continued the heritage today.

Throughout the years they’ve become the biggest bellyboard manufacturer in the UK.

The best-selling Christmas charity range is back for 2022 – when the spirit of giving is needed more than ever

As we look forward to the festive season, a non-profit charity range is set to offer something far more meaningful than just sparkle this Christmas.

Award-winning social enterprise, Advent of Change, has announced the long-awaited return of its festive charity range for 2022 – including its best-selling charity advent calendar, which replaces chocolate or plastic-filled advent calendars with a daily donation to 24 incredible causes, including Surfers Against Sewage.

Raising money for good causes

The pioneering concept has captured the hearts of many across the UK. It has raised over £700,000 for 100 different charities since 2018. Most importantly, it has helped a variety of causes from protecting our oceans, to providing medicines and support to those in need.

With new research from the Charities Aid Foundation estimating that 4.9m fewer people donated to charity in 2022, the non-profit organisation hopes to spread the spirit of giving more than ever this Christmas. This includes encouraging those who can, to swap chocolate for charity this year

A whole range of items

The inspiring charity-focused collection has now expanded to include an innovative range of products with unique ways to donate. From festive scented candles to Christmas crackers filled with celebrity jokes.

Committed to changing lives, Advent of Change founder, Kristina Salceanu, hopes to raise over £100,000 in 2022.

The aim was to bring together the UK surfing tribes to share the stoke, the storytelling and the cream of surf culture, and it has grown to become a must attend gathering for the global waveriding collective.

Accompanied by ‘Audiences With’ inspiring icons from the surf and screen and set against a backdrop of art, workshops, community, good times and more this saline hit of inspiration is the essential cultural happening for anyone of a salt water persuasion.

When life gives you challenges, make … KETOnuts? Kinetic founder  Harry has pursued a life of ultra-endurance challenges – from hiking across the Andes Mountains at 16, rowing the English Channel at 18, racing in Ironman events, and cycling across continents.

But it was the challenge in 2014 that the idea of the KETOnut sprung from. Whilst training to
cycle from London to Africa and back in less than 2 weeks, Harry hit a wall (not in literal terms!). The training was progressing, but the body was not.

Using his BSc in Sport and Exercise Science, he started testing his body against different
variables in diets – removing gluten, refined sugars, and grains, as well as using healthy fats as fuel. And so came the first lightbulb moment.

Harry wanted to keep his favourite snack – the doughnut – but reinvent it to meet his new dietary needs: something that was low in carbs, high in healthy fat, and free from refined sugar and gluten.

Intro, the KETOnut, and the idea of Kinetic Kitchen was born.
