Over 100 pubs, cafes and restaurants sign up to No Butts On The Beach

Our No Butts On The Beach campaign is into it's 5th year. In that time we have given out over 8,000 pocket ashtrays free to responsible smokers. And this year, before the smoking ban came in, we also successfully signed up over 100 responsible beachside pubs, café's and restaurants to the No Butts In The Beach campaign. These beachside establishments have vowed to provide static butt bins and signage for smokers to dispose of their butts responsibly. This campaign has never been more important. July the 1st saw England join Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales in banning smoking in public places. Smokers all over the UK are being forced outside to smoke. If they are not provided with an easy option to dispose of their butts they might be tempted to drop them on the floor.

Cigarette butts are already the most littered item in the world:

• Cigarette butts are one of the most commonly found litter items on beaches around the UK.
• They are not biodegradable, but made from 12,000 plastic fibres.
• 1 cigarette butt can take up to 15 years to break down.
• Each cigarette butt can pollute 3 litres of seawater.
• Cigarette butts are often mistaken for food by marine wildlife.
