CARBON DATING THE POLITICIANS

CARBON DATING THE POLITICIANSSurfers Against Sewage (SAS) campaigners were amongst the 700 people who carbon dated MP's in London over Climate Change yesterday. The Carbon Dating event was a bit like speed dating with politicians rotating around tables in 10 minute periods to hear what the public had to say!

The event organised by the Stop Climate Chaos coalition was a great success with many MP's, Lords and MP researchers meeting members of the public on the world's greatest issue of concern. Key to the event was a call on politicians to use their influence to get Gordon Brown to deliver a 'carbon budget': a limit to how much carbon dioxide the UK can produce each year.

Climate change is the biggest threat we face. And the evidence that it's already started is stacking up:

  • Yet more record-breaking global temperatures in 2005.
  • An increase in the number of 'natural' disasters around the world.
  • The rise in droughts hitting the world's poorest farmers.

To tackle climate change the world has to cut its emissions of greenhouse gases caused by burning oil, coal and gas. Political will to take the necessary decisions has to date been the single biggest obstacle in its way, but yesterday's action was a great step forward in putting this issue at the top of the political agenda.
