SAS support Ireland's Prime Minister in call to shutdown Sellafield

Surfers Against Sewage are in full support of Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern in his call for the Sellafield nuclear plant to be shut down. The surfers are questioning the government's justification for opening a mixed oxide fuel (MOX) plant on the site, particularly in light of the terrorist threat currently hanging over the world.

Vicky Garner of SAS said today;

"The Irish Sea is already one of the most radioactive waterways in the world. Since the 1950's radioactive waste from Sellafield has been allowed to spew into coastal waters off Cumbria, finely illustrating the out of sight, out of mind attitude of successive UK government's. The current government has done little to help the situation by giving the go-ahead to the opening of the MOX plant, which by its very operation will necessitate ships carrying mixed oxide fuel to travel the ocean to Japan. In light of the current terrorist threat it seems almost too ludicrous to be true".

"We call on Tony Blair to listen to Ireland's concerns. They may not be what he wants to hear, but we would question who has more support on this one - the Irish Prime Minister, or Prime Minister Blair - and that's support from both sides of the Irish Sea!"
