Hawaii - Message in the waves
Sunday 3rd February, 1.30pm
Duke Of York's Picturehouse, Preston Circus, Brighton BN1 4NA
If you're in Brighton and looking for something to do on Sunday the 3rd of February, then pop along to the Duke of York Picturehouse and watch Hawaii - Massage in the waves and 2 other short films made by children at Balfour Juniors School, 'The exciting adventures of the plastic bag' and 'Revenge of the rubbish'.
'Hawaii - Message in the waves' is a film from the BBC Natural History Unit looking at some of the environmental challenges facing the people and wildlife of the Hawaiian Islands and shows the impact our everyday activities have on ocean systems & wildlife. Although the documentary is from a Hawaiian perspective it is really a global film. Because of their
size, location and social history, the Hawaiian Islands represent a microcosm of the planet and are in a unique position to tell all of us where we are going wrong and what we can do to help put things right. This is the film Rebecca Hosking helped to make that inspired her to enable her home-town of Modbury in Devon to go plastic bag-free and is subsequently inspiring
towns all across the UK to go plastic bag-free. Let's make Brighton & Hove the first city!
What else is happening on Sunday 3rd Feb,1.30pm at the Duke of York's cinema?
Following Message in the Waves are two short films made by children at
Balfour Juniors School, 'The exciting adventures of the plastic bag' and
'Revenge of the rubbish', a talk by artist Lou McCurdy who spent a year
collecting plastic from a Brighton beach to create the installation 'More
Plastic than Plankton’, a short discussion with guest speakers (tba) and a
Q&A session.
Thanks to our sponsors, we will also have giveaways for all attending.
Is it really free?
This event is free to attend and will work on a first come, first seated
basis (apx 300 seats). We will be collecting donations for the Duke of
York's roof renovation fund, by way of thanks for their generosity in
hosting this event at no cost.
